Getting found

Why your Bing listing also decides what Yahoo shows

Many business owners check their Google listing and stop there. Bing gets less attention, yet one listing there reaches more than Bing itself. It also affects Yahoo, and it can affect what some AI platforms say about you.

Yahoo results come from Bing

Yahoo search results are powered by Bing. A business that is missing or wrong on Bing is usually missing or wrong on Yahoo too. One complete listing covers both.

Many people use Yahoo as their default search, and many use Bing through Windows and Microsoft Edge. You don't need to know how many in your market. You only need to know that a single Bing listing serves all of them.

Some AI platforms draw on Bing data

Some AI platforms use Bing's search index or data when they look up local businesses. Which platforms do, and how heavily, changes over time. We treat Bing as one of several sources that can shape an AI answer. A correct Bing listing is cheap to maintain and removes one way an AI platform could repeat wrong information about you.

This doesn't replace your Google Business Profile. It adds to it. Google remains a major source for local search, and the work you put into a Google profile carries over to Bing because the details are the same.

What a complete Bing Places listing includes

Bing Places is Microsoft's free tool for business listings. A complete listing has these parts:

  • Business name, exactly as it appears on your sign and website
  • Street address, or a service area if you travel to customers
  • Main phone number
  • Website address
  • Hours, including holiday hours
  • Primary category and any extra categories that fit
  • A short business description
  • Photos of your location, team, and work
  • Services you offer

You also need to verify ownership. Until you do, changes may not go live and you can't control what shows.

Keep name, address, phone, and hours consistent

Search engines and AI platforms compare what they find about your business across many sources. When the name, address, phone number, or hours differ, they have to guess which version is right. Small differences count. "Suite 4" on one listing and "Ste. 4" on another is a mismatch. So is an old phone number on a directory you forgot about.

Pick one exact version of each detail. Use it on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, Nextdoor, and every directory that lists you.

Duplicates cause the same trouble. If Bing shows two listings for one location, merge or remove the extra one. Customers and platforms can't tell which is current.

Why hours and categories deserve attention

Hours are the detail that goes stale fastest. A customer who drives to a closed business after reading wrong hours remembers it, and may leave a review about it. Categories matter because they tell a search engine which searches your business fits. A plumber listed only under a general category can miss searches for drain cleaning or water heaters. Choose the category that matches your main service first, then add others that are true.

Descriptions and services deserve the same care. Write them in plain words that match how customers ask. Avoid stuffing in keywords. A short, accurate description helps a person decide, and it gives a platform clean text to reuse.

A short checklist

  • Search for your business on Bing and see what appears.
  • Claim or create your Bing Places listing and verify it.
  • Fill in every field, not just the required ones.
  • Match your name, address, phone, and hours to your website.
  • Add photos and a short description.
  • Update hours before each holiday.
  • Recheck every few months, and after any move or phone change.
